Why Can’t Anime Create Good Horror?

Lostty writes: "Just in time for Halloween, I decided to take a few moments to talk about the horror in anime, and more so, how it’s barely horror at all. I’m sure we’ve all seen our share of people commenting about this subject, often asking: “Does anyone know a genuinely scary horror anime?”. I like to think the question is actually a pretty valid one. If you were to take a look at some of the horrors out there (ie. Another), despite being part of the genre, it still never succeeds at being something scary to nearly any who watch it, but why? Well, I’ll try to take a stab at some of the factors behind this." It all depends on what you consider to be horror. A lot of people in my opinion confuse "horror" with "scary". Most "horror anime" goes under the category psychological horror. If you're looking for a jump scare anime, well you won't find it. Seeing an animated feature of something killing something in a brutal way is well kind of lame and funny. You can't really relate to it like you can a live action film, which is what makes those a little more on the "scary" side. So I personally would change the title of this article to "Why can't Anime be really scary?" Again this is just an opinion.

Agreed.

When it comes to Anime/Manga/Manwha those excel at making psychological horror with the f'ed up endings and what have you. The whole scare tactics thing doesn't really apply them, IMO. That kinda stuff is more suited to gaming where you are controlling the character (look up Condemned: Criminal Origins) and not just sitting back watching.

Though I will say, the scene where Yuno was looking through the mail slip on the door kinda caught me off guard for a sec.

Watch the last episode of School Days and tell me anime can't do horror. That aside, Higurashi was good and the first arc definitely had a lot of tension.

school days' last episode? that's not horror, that's just shocker related, anything to do with the horror the autor is talking about, he is talking about something that will give you the creeps, and have your heart beating really fast, that was just damn D: "

Vampire Hunter D wasnt a horror 2 me. New horror animes are all the same crap. Some silly school incident or school myth.
