A recent Biglobe Anime Ranking poll, asking Japanese fans to name their favorite anime inspired by Shonen Jump manga says something about recency bias, but it always says something about the evolution of what was once the quintessential boys manga magazine. The top spot didn't go to one of "big three" (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece). It went to a series with heaps of cross-over appeal and remarkable female readership.
On another note, I'm surprised at Medaka Box taking 3rd, granted it was certainly amusing but as of late I've got barely any idea what's going on. I know it's supposed to be a satire of some typical Shounen tropes but good God above it's like the author doesn't even care how batshit it all seems. Gintama definitely deserved second, and it's easily the only longest-running manga I've read that's been consistent in terms of quality; what it lacks in artistic value it's made up for time and time again with some pretty heartwarming serious story moments and outrageously funny material, though I do feel at times that some of the references made are a little vague.
for me, no other action oriented anime has mixed comedy and decent fighting as well
"One Piece has interesting design but the characterization is complete arse and every couple of pages I have to pause to stop laughing at the ridiculous dialogue."
that's because you're reading it in english!
I dont like that but its cool.
