One Last Gasp of Cosplay Insanity

With a name like Comic Market, you'd think the late December event in Tokyo would be all about manga. It's so not.

While Kotaku's Toshi Nakamura was getting an insider's look at the event, outside in the chilly cold, fans donned colorful, creative, and often crazy outfits, bringing their favorite video game, anime, and manga (and meme!) characters to life. Japanese site Asagawo Blog documented the festivities.

The twice a year Comic Market, or "Comiket" as it's called, started back in December 1975. In the last few years, as cosplay has become increasingly mainstream, the dress-up element has become a big draw. It's one of the last big cosplay events of the year in Japan.

If you ever want to put your finger on what's hip with Japanese geeks, keep tabs on what people are cosplaying as.

In case you missed it, here is cosplay chaos from the summer Comiket. (Comiket, Cosplay, Culture)
