The wraparound jacket band that was placed on the 5th and 6th full-color manga volumes has revealed that the Highschool of the Dead manga will soon come off hiatus.

Woah, finally? I really had given up hope that the series would ever come back in any form at this point. Seriously, it has been nearly two years. I know the Hunter x Hunter guy does hiatuses all the time, but that was for a hugely popular series, not one like this. Hopefully it'll stay running long enough to potentially make a second anime season. They literally didn't even leave off on a cliff-hanger in the manga's last chapter. Sure they found one of the people they were looking for and started heading towards a potential escape path, but that's not much of a cliff-hanger at all.
Hmmm, this is a manga I read between long running mangas and I enjoyed it but it just didnt give me that same feeling as other manga, hopefully this will change that.
I knew the manga was on hiatus but why? This article has no clue either. Whatever it was, im just glad they arent letting this manga die and not reach a conclusion.
As far as I know there never was an exact reason given for the hiatus. I know for a little bit he took a break from this one to help get his brother's Triage X manga off the ground, but when that went on hiatus over half a year ago no one knew what happened. There was even talk of them sleeping with each other's wives at one point so its mostly all spec.
