While the Memorial Day weekend was sluggish to say the least without any major tentpoles opening to draw people in, it also impacted the specialty market even more so as there was little to draw people out. Of interest to anime fans was the arrival of the latest Studio Ghibli film with When Marnie Was There, which opened in two theaters in limited release. The film didn’t do quite as good as Princess Kaguya did last year, but the film did $32,590 over the four day weekend. Princess Kaguya by contrast did $54, 915 back in October in three theaters over a three day period. It’s expected that the film will do well in general based on the numbers, with additional screenings added in select cities on May 29th with a stronger rollout in the top 40 markets planned for June 5th, 2015.
