Not really, because there are times when the filler is needed i.e. when the anime has caught right up to the manga. But Shippuuden was miles behind the manga by the time the last canon arc finished. Pretty much every other mega-shounen anime was actually closer to their manga counterparts.
I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Bleach did it and it was hell. The worst part was when the fillers were over, they spent nearly an entire episode recapping what happened before the fillers started. At least the last 4 minutes were new. :)
Hunter X Hunter bloody did that, and it was only on the 13th episode!!! I was like WTF?! I don't have the memory capacity of a goldfish! Worst thing is that there was literally NO new content in that episode.
