When They Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
I would have to say this anime is a psychological horror and if you dislike graphic violence then I would say stay away from this anime. I just finished watching the first season about a week ago and I have to say this was a very enjoyable anime for me. I’m not a horror fan myself but the way the story is unfolded and the way its told is very intriguing.
The story is told in a way where it shows the end results then latter it will show you what lead up to that situation. It does this constantly but it’s not done in a way that would have you confused. The story basically follows five teenagers/preteens that all get their separate story arc that adds to the mystery of the town. The stories generally answer a question that happened earlier in past episodes but the events don’t actually happen exactly as they did but the end result is the same. For me, it opened up the characters personalities more and would show their hidden side. If anyone has seen the Melachony of Harruhi Suzamiya and the endless eight episodes should be satisfied that this is nothing like that and perhaps if that anime would have borrowed from this it would be a 10 instead of a 9.5 for me.
I can’t go too much into detail about the story because it would just ruin the enjoyment, what I can tell you is that the main protagonist is Keiichi Maebara, who just moved into town with his family and while talking to his class mates discovers that there were a bunch of murders that happened and to seem to fall on the same day as their annual festival.
The series did keep me engaged and wondering exactly what was going on and who was doing what. In the end it satisfied me with its story telling and ending and at the same time got me anxious for more. I think it does a great job of answering the necessary questions and also leaving just enough to get you to watch the next season.
