One Piece mangaka Eiichiro Oda has given an interview explaining his dissatisfaction with the fact that there are no ranks amongst mangaka, and that there is no special title other than plain “mangaka” available to demonstrate he is no mere mangaka.
While he didn't out right come out and say he is better then other mangaka it's obviously what he is implying by wanting rankings of some sort.
Personally I don't think he is all that great. While One Piece is a sales monster it's not all appealing. It's one of those love it or hate it franchises. I'm personally not really much of a fan of the manga or the show. But I won't get into why and such.
Bottom line is who is a better mangaka is for the fans to decide. Each person has different taste and as such will think someone is better then someone else. I for example am a massive CLAMP fan and there has been very few things over the course of the groups career that I haven't loved and that's saying alot when you consider how much they have released. But yet others won't like CLAMP and that's perfectly fine. It's their preference. For them someone else will be the better Mangaka. That's just how stuff like this works. It's all personal taste.
he is better than some mangaka. He's also not proven himself as much as others. In my opinion, you don't get to be called master until you churn out more than one quality product.
Actually its a lot harder keeping a single manga popular and interesting than making a new one. You learn a lot about the manga industry by reading Bakuman, i highly recommend it, its by the same mangaka that made Death Note.
“I Am Better Than Other Mangaka!”, he never said that in the interview, but he did say there should be ranks of some kind.
Ranks might make some readers more bias, some of upcoming mangaka or small mangaka probably would get less reader, who knows
Oda fucking sucks. Togashi, Kishimoto. They're all better than this idiot...
It's a strange statement from Oda, but in my opinion he is one damn good mangaka.
If you read his manga and understood his sense of humor you would be laughing at this story not analyzing it.
