DRAGONBALLZ!!!!! Not on the list...list is FAIL

Peaceful_Jelly4185d ago

he is talking about animes that non anime fans can enjoy. DBZ is a staring contest with a plot as thin as a toothpick and absurd over the top powers.

WildArmed4185d ago (Edited 4185d ago )

Thou the staring contest tones down quite a bit if you watch the re-make DB:Kai lol

Though I wouldn't expect much either way. There is no way around the screaming and plot starts off w/ 'over 9000' and keeps going till 'over 1 trillion'

crwatkins4185d ago

I personally think a large portion of Dragon Ball is fail.

Shang-Long4185d ago

in titled to your own opinion but i disagree. db was class but thats my opinion

Senden4185d ago

Depends on the age group and viewers interests. It was low on plot but made up for it with loads of cool over the top action.

Personally, i'm surprised naruto isn't mentioned. Despite probably a lot of haters, it's something quite unique. Combines good character development with a good story and the strategic nature of the battles is refreshingly different. Plus the music score in the original series is some of the best i've seen in an anime series.

No this list fails because besides Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion and some Studio Ghibli movies which I could agree with, there are plenty of amazing anime anyone should see (not exhausive) :

- Ima sokoni iru boku (Now and Then, Here and There)
- Tokyo Godfathers (movie)
- Death Note
- Gunslinger Girl
- Mushi-Shi
- Saishuu Heiki Kanojo (She, the Ultimate Weapon)
- Kino no Tabi (Kino's Journey)
- Elfen Lied
- Maison Ikkoku
- Voices of a Distant Star (OAV)
- Haibane Renmei (Charcoal Feathers Federation)
- Perfect Blue (movie)

After watching Dragonball, Gurren Lagann, and FLCL I'm trying to get into anime again. Which series should I watch, Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in the Shell?

Tetsuryu4185d ago (Edited 4185d ago )

If possible, watch both. But if I had to recommend one, it would be Cowboy Bebop. Mostly due to its legendary standing in the industry and it's a bit easier to follow than GitS: SAC which can be dialogue heavy (it spans 2 seasons and a movie). There's also the Cowboy Bebop Movie that takes place between episode 22 and 23 if you're interested in that as well.

They're both very excellent and again, I would encourage watching both.

Tetsuryu4185d ago

One other thing (couldn't edit on time), both series are currently being aired on Adult-Swim via Cartoon Network's channel (most basic cable/satellite packages should have it) on late Saturdays (technically early Sundays) if you live in the US. Right now they're airing 2 episodes of each back to back.

RockmanII74185d ago (Edited 4185d ago )

It would be quicker if I just watch it on Megavideo/Youtube. Also does [AS] usually air FLCL on Saturdays? How can they do that, there are only 6 episodes. Do they just run one a week and just play the same 6 ones over and over? Also when I said which series should I watch I meant watch next, I plan on watching both eventually.

crwatkins4185d ago

That's actually one of the reasons I put those two on the list. I was trying to find stuff that was easy to get your hands on. GitS is also on Netflix. Both series and all the movies.

I would also suggest watching Bebop first. There's a strong case to be made that it might be the best anime of all time. It's one of those things that transcends the genre.

Tetsuryu4185d ago (Edited 4185d ago )

By "non-legal" means, it's most definitely possible through Google searches for streams, though I don't condone it. Personally I prefer to support the industry (by purchasing Blu-rays/DVDs, etc.) whenever possible.

Concerning FLCL, it tends to make infrequent airings on AS. Usually it'll make a normal weekly run (in a similar fashion that you described) then disappear for months (sometimes over a year) after the final episode has aired. Typically it'll get replaced by another repeat series like The Big O or something else in the week following the last episode.

RockmanII74185d ago

@crwatkins I've lost all faith in Netflix. Like I said in my first comment, I recently watch Gurren Lagann and Netflix put the wrong episode in one of the episode spots and the first thing said was a huge spoiler, ruined the biggest plot twist of the series. After that I stopped trusting them.

If I could only watch one, I would watch Cowboy Bebop. Watch it first.

Peaceful_Jelly4185d ago

I always recommend Gantz to everybody. And if you liked Dragon Ball then you'll gonna like Hunter X Hunter, a really good series too.

I always wanted to watch Ghost in the Shell cus I absolutely love Masamune Shirow's art and then I heard that a 3rd season is coming out this year. So I started with the first season last week and right now I'm on episode 13 and I like it but absolutely hate the fact that there is no main plot. Every ep tells the story of a different case that Section 9 is investigating.

And if you wanna watch a current trendy anime then watch "Toaru Majutsu no Index". It has lolis, moeblob, pantsu, oppai, action, lots of fan-service and all that crap that defines the current state of anime. Right now this is like the biggest **** in Japan along with K-on and all that garbage that is destroying the industry. But Toaru is actually good...

crwatkins4185d ago

Stick with Stand Alone Complex. There actually is a main plot with the Laughing Man, but it just doesn't dominate every episode. I would say the last five or six episodes of the series are all part of a single arc. Even some of the stand alone stories have little bits that fit into the overall arc.

My list:

1. Akira
2. Rurouni Kenshin (especially the second season)
3. Cowboy Bebop
4. Samurai Champloo
5. The 8th MS Team Gundam
6. Monster
7. Hajime No Ippo
8. Dragon Ball
9. Berserk
10. Jin Roh

dillydadally4185d ago

I'm trying to avoid overly gory or heavy horror anime's - not my thing. What ones should I cut out on your list if I'm interested in seeing them (I've heard I should avoid Berserk for example)?

ShinFuYux4184d ago (Edited 4184d ago )

Rurouni Kenshin, it has some blood here and there but nothing to the levels of what you see in jin roh, berserk or akira.

Hajime no Ippo is very influential. It has heavy violence in the sense that it's a boxing anime, so they over exaggerate the punches and such when they are in the ring, but at the same time, you are drawn into it.

Monster, this is a psychological anime that takes place in Germany and Czech Republic. Slow but very good, you just have to keep up with it because the ending really sums up everything in a great manner.

MS Team Gundam, this is more of a mature theme of gundam, so they try to make it more "realistic" in the sense the gundams aren't big, powerful robots but more like a helpful weapon to fight the war. I enjoyed it, it's not too over the top like the other gundam anime or even Evangelion.

There's many more great anime out there, i just said these ten because they are my top favorites.

Peaceful_Jelly4185d ago

I watched Akira for the first time ever a couple of days ago and for a movie that was made almost 25 years ago the animation and everything is so so so incredibly amazing!

Bathyj4185d ago

Ok, so I'll say Akira and get it out of the way.
Ghost in the Shell the Movie Groundbreaking, influenced so much.
Ninja Scroll the Movie
Samurai X The four episodes Betrayal I think, Cross Shaped Wound, that one.
Cowboy Beebop Classic style
Samurai Champloo is awesome, really fresh and great action.
Evangenlian Neon Genesis God the questions just never stopped coming.
Astroboy 80's Astro is just to good of heart
Legend of the Overfiend. Love the twist ending
Venus Wars. I remember really enjoying it, but its not a big name.
Princess Monoke Spellbinding. Why isnt this a game? I want to ride an elk.
Crommarti High School. Weird, definitely weird. But funny.
