A few decades ago there were two main “defining” elements of Japan in the eyes of the West – art and war. This is accurately summarized in the title of anthropologist Ruth Benedict's 1946 study of the Japanese people The Chrysanthemum and the Sword. For a time, nearly all the stereotypical things that one might associate with the country could be linked to these two cultural aspects: geisha and samurai, woodblock prints and swords, quiet tea gardens and formidable castles."
