This is a little sad. He did say in an interview that the rights would have to be pried from his cold, dead hands, meaning the adaption may not happen if Cameron doesn't do it.

And while Avatar has a huge following and a sequel is a garantueed success, they rarely are as good as the original. A second movie may be feasible, but a third and fourth isn't really necessary and could ruin the franchise in the eyes of the fans. Kind of like the Matrix sequels.

If Cameron has no plans of doing the adaption, he might as well give the rights to someone else. Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott or the Wachowski brothers could do an equally impressive job.
