No matter how I look at it, it’s you guys fault I’m not popular
First off I would like to say, that poor girl. Normally I don’t do a “Anime You Should be Watching,” before its complete but there is always an exception. Now if you haven’t seen this anime or heard about it then I suggest you go right now and check it out. This anime seems to follow a similar spirit as Welcome to the NHK but a lot more embarrassing and not as dark.
Watatome follows a fifteen year old girl named Tomoko who is starting high school, Tomoko was unpopular in middle school and believes after this transition she will become more popular, however, this is not the case. She becomes anti social and can not even converse with anyone outside her family and her newly reunited best friend Yuu chan without becoming nervous and shy. So after awhile she takes a good look at herself and decides she needs to change.
Through the series Tomoko comes up with some strange ideas that she feels will lead her to become more popular, it’s also worth mentioning that Tomoko has a very active imagination were she will see her self as this grand character and become the most popular person in school. This might also account for some of the stories she told to her close friend and family as she doesn’t want to be viewed as a social outcast or pathetic because of her social standing and lack of social activities.
This is where the series gives Tomoko her charm because for all intent and purposes she is a regular girl trying to find her place and do what she believes to be normal for kids her age. Despite her best interest, her ideas don’t seem to pan out well, or at least not how she intends, and some of the situations she gets her self into left me feeling a bit embarrassed for her. Much like Welcome to the NHK you feel a genuine bond with the character and really and truly want to see them succeed only for them to fail miserably and leave you shaking your head but eager to see the next attempt and hoping that it will go much better.
I love this series and sometimes I wish the character was real so I could give her a hug and say it’s gonna be alright. The other thing I like about her is that she is a complete Otaku who watches anime, reads manga, and of course plays her H games. I think a lot of people can relate to her and her situation and find something they like about her.
So if you haven’t checked it out on crunchyroll go do it and buy the manga and ensure that it has enough popularity to have a second season and an anime dubb released shortly.
