Why Did Denji Eat Makima In Chainsaw Man?

As many Chainsaw Man fans know, Denji has an eccentric personality. This may be because he lacked parental guidance and lived in severe poverty. However, there is one thing Denji does that is, admittedly, a bit incomprehensible, and that is Cannibalism. Out of the many weird and disgusting things Denji eats, this one has more meaning. Denji is not a picky eater.

One thing we can Denji partake in time and time again is eating various disgusting things. For example, his former Boss underling offered to pay him 100 Yen if he ate a cigarette bud (and he did with an itadakimasu). The second time we see Denji eating something utterly foul is when Himeno tries to kiss him but throws up in his mouth instead! And Denji eats it! Of course, he runs to the bathroom to throw up, but this proves Denji can and will eat anything.

Now onto the meat and potatoes with a side of miso. So, right from the start of the anime, when we are introduced to Makima in Chainsaw Man, Denji always has some attraction to her. This can be due to many reasons. For starters, Denji did not have anyone else to speak to besides Pochita. Makima was also the only person to treat him normally, even when he smelled terrible.

As we mentioned previously, Denji did not have any parental guidance and did not go to school. It is also often shown that Denji is socially awkward and does not know how to interact with his peers. Due to this, it was extremely easy for Makima to groom and control him with sexual favors. Because of this, we see Denji grow quite affectionate towards Makima in Chainsaw Man. As he often believed she cared about him (spoiler, she did not!).

However, this was soon proven to be false. Makima only cared about Pochita, the true Chainsaw Devil. During the Control Devil Arc, we see Denji kill Makima after she gets a hold of Pochita. Denji does not stop there, though. After the battle in Chapter 96, we see Denji making a meal for himself in his apartment. In the fridge, we see tightly sealed boxes. And in the last panel, we see Denji confirming that he is eating Makima. But why is this?

Denji acknowledges that Makima is not a good person, but he can’t ignore that she was good to him (also, he was groomed, so that plays a part). But there are a few reasons why he did this. One of the reasons is that, by eating Makima, he will bear the burden of her sins. This indicates Denji may feel reasonable for all the deaths caused by Makima to obtain the Chainsaw Devil.

The final reason is that Denji always wanted to become “one” with Makima out of love and affection for her. But, while Makima did groom him, let’s not forget that Denji is a young teenage boy; and thus will have urges. So, while Denji cannot sleep with Makima, he eats her in Chainsaw Man.
