"The Atelier franchise has always walked a fine line between greatness and mediocrity. The games have always been a good step or two shy of becoming excellent, while remaining one false move from being average. Last year's Atelier Totori overcame its flaws with a freeform sense of adventure and a heartfelt story revolving around a sympathetic main character. Sadly, Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland lacks both of those traits and fails to correct its predecessor's missteps. The result is a game that will disappoint returning fans while remaining too niche to appeal to the greater role-playing game audience at large."
