As my anime watching career progressed, I’ve branched out into just about every genre the medium has to offer. The first genre that really engaged me, a genre I’ve always held close to my heart, is slice of life.
I believe slice of life is both a genre and a method of storytelling. The episodic structure, generally light mood, and simple plot dynamics of slice of life anime make them very accessible to new viewers. A good slice of life anime focuses on its characters, establishing a connection between characters and the viewer. The driver of the audience’s enjoyment of the show is its ability to relate with the familiar characters, settings, and events depicted.
