I think the best way to get into anime is to start with the basic shounen jump shows that airs like every day. Then it's time to move on the the more relatively obscure shows.

You don't need experience to watch a television series; the crucial thing is to find something you like.

I started off with Cowboy Bebop which I do not think was a good start. Bebop was so good and by the time I finished the series, I was so attached as it became my favorite cartoon of all time along with Batman TAS, so other anime just seemed boring to me. Darker Than Black and Samurai Champloo are the only other animes that come close to Bebop. But that's just me.

Death note .. if you want to make a big impression and tell you friends how anime are cool, give them the best and DT is the best choice.

This is how most of my friends got into anime. Simply I believe it has the appeal.
