When You're Here, You're Not Family - Family Abuse in Loveless

"The abusiveness was something I wanted to draw from the beginning. I feel that parents who abuse their children are very bad. But at the same time, I was interested in how they become abusive.” - Yun Kouga on Ritsuka Aoyagi’s development through child abuse. (Yun Kouga Panel at Anime Expo 2009)

"When you think about how life has put you down, a natural response would be to get angry. You look for something or someone to blame. What if you decide to take it out on a child? After all, children can be nuisances and make you agitated from time to time. They can’t fight back, no matter what they do, as you’re “stronger" than them. Yun Kouga’s Loveless explored the issue of child abuse with regards to the main character, Ritsuka Aoyagi, and his treatment by his mother, Misaki Aoyagi. What’s even more frightening is how another family member plays a role to the abuse and creates a vicious cycle. The power of abuse is something we continue to underestimate in reality and the Aoyagi family situation is a harsh reminder of that."
