Nisekoi Episode 20 (Finale) Impressions and Notes

Another entry in my note-taking and thought-jotting series of posts on currently running shows. This episode is the grand finale, full of sweet moments, but also a lot of silly hijinks. The write-up also has a lengthier post-episode look-back.

As always, the notes were taken while actually watching the episode, and rather than just repeating what you've already watched, elaborate upon it, assuming you've already watched the episode.

Nisekoi was an interesting show - I watched it for being a cliched and regular RomCom, and sometimes when it was, it pissed me off.

The characters that I hoped would move the story grated on me and then didn't (move the story), and the girls I liked best didn't get much screentime. For a supposed harem, one girl dominated all the screentime, honestly.

Still, an enjoyable show :)

I found this show to be... disappointing. Coming from Shaft (my favorite animation studio) and Akiyuki Shinbo (my favorite director) I really expected more than just another rom-com harem anime. Nisekoi just really lacked the heart and soul of their other shows.

First, you probably came to it with the wrong expectations, then. It was pretty much known that it'd be a standard RomCom, and that's what I watched it for. The manga is the /quintessential/ RomCom, and that's what it wishes to be. What did you expect Shaft to do? They can deal with presentation, but they weren't going to make an anime-original.

Second, Shinbo wasn't very involved with Nisekoi, more of a hands-off sort of involvement, and a bit more for the first episode, which did feel more like him. The real director behind the show is Tatsuwa Naoyuki.

Well, when it was announced Shinbo's name was attached as director, so I expected it to take the kind of liberties that he took with other shows.

I didn't expect him to turn the series on it's head, but to at least spice things up and not create such a by the numbers harem anime. Honestly I'm mostly surprised that Shaft decided to adapt such an unambitious series.

Great show, I knew it wouldn't have a true ending but it was a fun ride to the very end. Season 2 hopefully?
