Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Series Collection Review [Capsule Computers]

Sergei Lazarev writes:

"Madman has released a whole bunch of Gundam box sets recently, namely the original series and its direct sequel Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Say what you will about the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam, but this is a rare case when the sequel excels on all fronts."

Not really a rare case. Sequels tend to be better than the original, due to the simple fact that original stories are all about establishing things, and sequels are all about moving established things into interesting directions.

That can be true, but a huge proportion of sequels these days are a lot weaker than the original vision of the first season. But that's often because of changes to staff.

You're thinking of franchise fatigue, not sequels.

Just this past generation:

Borderlands 2 > Borderlands 1
Mass Effect 2 > Mass Effect 1
Assassins Creed 2 > Assassins Creed 1
Dark Souls > Demons Souls
Shadowrun Dragonfall > Shadowrun Returns
Witcher 2 > Witcher 1
Portal 2 > Portal 1
Half Life 2 > Half Life 1
Arkham City > Arkham Asylum

And historically:

Freespace 2 > Freespace 1
Baldur's Gate 2 > Baldur's Gate 1
Mechwarrior 2 > Mechwarrior
Age of Empires 2 > Age of Empires 1
Fallout 2 > Fallout 1
Empire Strikes Back > A New Hope

And so on and so on and so on. Cases of originals outshining sequels are actually kind of rare. In the case of games, this is easily explained by the fact that the first game requires a ton of work that doesn't need to be done for the second game--assets, scripting, hell, building the whole engine for everything to run on--which means that once you get to the second game you have a LOT more time and resources to devote to making everything better.

I didn't realise we were talking about video games all of a sudden. This is about Gundam, and primarily anime.

Amuro1277d ago

Zeta Gundam it's the greatest Gundam anime ever made.

Canary1275d ago

Pssh, you would say that.

Only reason Zeta gets the top spot is for MSG notstalgia. And, yeah, seeing Amuro and Char be awesome is, well, awesome--but on its own merit alone Zeta falls a bit flat. Especially considering it doesn't actually -end-.

So my vote goes to Turn A, with Zeta tied for second with Victory.
