Screen Junkies: The top ten anime titles of all time are animated series and movies that have voyaged to the USA from Japanese shores. If you enjoy anime, you may want to become familiar with these intriguing plots and complex characters.
A list like this is so pointless. Comparing these shows to each other and ranking them as all time bests makes no sense. Yes many of the shows and fillms on the lists are great and have and more then likely will continue to withstand the test of time. You can't tell someone to watch everything on this list and expect them to enjoy it all. I for example loved FLCL but hated Yu Yu Hakusho. Loved Ouran but thought Cowboy Bebop was only ok. Not to mention where are some of the other greats? Like Perfect Blue, Millieunm Actress, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Patlabor(In particular Patlabor 2), Blood The Last Vampire, and series like Gundam, Macross, GITS Stand Alone Complex, Dragon Ball Z, Utena, Escaflowne and many many more. Simply put even if a list like this made sense you wouldn't be able to narrow it down to only 10 unless it was based on pure personal opinion and at that point it stops being greatest all time and just a top 10 favorite list. And why make a list like this if you aren't even gonna really go into what makes the show so great. They pretty much just put really vague summaries on what the shows are and not what made them great or what has made them keep their appeal for so long.
That's the thing though. I just think people are probably too lazy to REALLY make a list of what they would consider the best because it would take a while to order it from 1-10. Even when I talk to other friends about anime, I can't even make a firm list of my top 10. I will have to say though, anime in general seems to have died down a "little" when it comes to truly story driven things. It's most likely just me, but I just want to see more stuff that is "out there" like another Ergo Proxy or Teknolize (spelling?). I also wish they would start making anime of some of the mangas out now that are either done are really far, (Mirri Nikki, Alive: The Final Evolution, Onani Master Kurosawa, Fire Candy, The Breaker, (though that's manwha), etc...). I don't know how the process of manga to anime works and all the stuff they have to go through to get it done, but it would be nice to see some of those and more in anime.
"“Ouran High School Host Club.” In this anime title, a tomboy joins a club at an upper-class school to pay off a debt. Her down-to-earth ways mystify and charm the other students." Haha, what. That's not the best summary.
Is FLCL really that great? I watched the first episode and didnt know what the hell was going on half the time or what the show was about... all I remember was guitar's coming out of peoples foreheads and thinking what a weird weird show
I for one loved how completely crazy it was. It was funny, the animation was great, nice music, craziness abound...it was really fresh
Agreed. The thing that made FLCL, along with every other highly praised anime, so great was it's sense of uniqueness. Not to mention, it was that anime which is the reason I have almost every song from The Pillows on my iPod, amazing band. When I get the chance, I really need to get the Blu ray version of the series.
It's definately one of a kind, can't argue there
It's definitely weird, but it's also extremely familiar, I've always loved the seeming contrast of extremes in FLCL. The way I see it you can describe FLCL in two lines of thought. 1. 'Imaginative boy in a boring town grows up a little bit' 2. 'a giant iron threatens the earth, it can only be stopped by the infamous space pirate, atomsk.'
FLCL was REALLY good, especially for only been 6 eps. But, IMO, I would still put Cowboy Bebop as number one of all time, followed by Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann as number two. The rest would mean I would have to sit back and take time to think about it and I just don't feel like doing it right now. On a side note, They are putting Cowboy Bebop the movie (blu-ray version) on Amazon this June for a good price, if anyone was interested.
fail list is fail.. I have see all this anime and in total I have see over 300 different anime of all kind & genre and I can think so many to replace some if not all the titles in this list, first of all how is it possible to make a TOP 10 anime list a serious TOP 10 and not include anime like: Fullmetal Alchemist Great Teacher Onizuka Dragonball Hunter X Hunter Hajime no Ippo The Twelve Kingdoms Ghost in the Shell Full Metal Panic! Nodame Cantabile School Rumble Monster Eureka Seven Nana Fate Stay Night Macross Katanagatari Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann I know I write more than 10 but what I want to say is look how many classics/must-see this guy left out of a TOP 10 anime list, all this Anime is some of the best there is and that's not just my personal opinion be sure about that.
The Twelve Kingdoms < Number 1 for me Akira Blood: The Last Vampire Ghost in the Shell (film, series is awesome as well) Monster PlanetEs The Place Promised in Our Early Days The Girl Who Leaped Through Time Hellsing Cowboy Bebop Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu FLCL Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Spirited Away Grave of the Fireflies Trigun Evangelion Great Teacher Onizuka Perfect Blue Tied for last place, Berserk and Golden Boy. =) ^^ A much superior list. Still missing a few. Consider it my Top 20 for now.
Ninja Scrolls (movie)
Blood: the last vampire (movie)
Ghost int the Shell (movie)?
Any top 10 lists are never enough to satisfy the masses. I personally loved FLCL. In my top 5. I can never really be sure what anime is my favorite, it just depends on my mood. Here are some of my favorite animes I have seen so far: Egro Proxy Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad Cowboy Bebop Darker than Black Eureka Seven Eden of the East Samurai Champloo Spice and Wolf
Just started Eden of the East, looks great.
I don't agree with most of the animes on that list but one thing is sure, the best animes were made in 80s and 90s, it's all downhill in this last decade just fanservice, harem, etc.
I really enjoyed (and own) Area 88 (and not the crappy remake). Come to think of it I think you may be right
Although I agree that Anime has a disgusting amount of fan service and harems I think Ergo Proxy, Witch Hunter Robin, Mushishi, Paprika, tekkonkinkreet, Spirited away, Claymore, Spice and Wolf, Death Note, Paranoia Agent, Samurai Champloo, Last Exile and many others would disagree with you. there have been plenty of great anime since the 90's, there will be many more, and as per usual you will have to dig through the garbage to find it.
The guy who wrote for Ergo Proxy hates the anime industry so... there's that. Also there's a few people in the industry who have the vision and sort of stand apart as... visionaries. Satoshi Kon (Paprika, Paranoia Agent, etc etc) is one of them, obviously Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Mononoke Hime, etc) as well. Makoto Shinkai (5cm per second, voices of a distant star, etc) has yet to branch out into other themes but he always creates something worth watching by treating it with respect and some gorgeous animation. For something perhaps more mainstream but still of high quality I might recommend something by Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars).
@squidyj I'll miss you Satoshi Kon RIP :'( I watched the trailer for The girl who leapt through time and it didn't really grab me, but I've seen a number of people recommending it and Summer wars so I'll probably have to watch them.
No K-ON in the first place?
No Gurren Lagann... wat
That list is awful FLCL number 1? you kidding me? Here's my list. #1.DBZ #2.Gundam Wing #3.Outlaw Star #4.Rurouni Kenshin #5.Full Metal Alchemist. #6.Samurai Champloo #7.Cowboy Bebop #8.Pokemon #9.ABENOBASHI #10.NARUTO This is my all time favorite list but how the F you name FCLC #1? I try to watch and understand the series but it doesn't even make any sense to me what so ever and another thing it aired so freaking late at night couldn't even stay up to try to watch. and you sir have a FAIL LIST
Too much for one list...
