AnimeShinbun February 2012 Contests
Hi everyone!
Hope you're all having a good month. I just got back to Australia after a bit more than 2 months overseas, and I'm totally jetlagged. ^^;;;
Once I'm no longer jetlagged, I'll be going through the entries we had for our mascot competition over December and January. There's a possibility that we may not be able to award any prizes for that one, depending on what exactly we've got in our entries. If that does happen, then we'll strike that and just award some prizes for contributors and commentators based on our now standard random draw + weighted average draw model.
What I'll also be doing this week once I'm over that jetlag is making sure all the prizes for our December contests are sent out. Apologies everyone involved there for the delay.
Speaking of delays...since this month's contests are being posted late thanks to the tail-end of my overseas trip, we'll be making this month's contests nice and simple.
February Contests:
Contributor Contest
Commentator Contest
Two contests, same basic principle. With both of these contests, all you have to do to win is to post. For the contributor contest, we'll be looking at accepted news articles and blog posts, while for the commentator contest, we're looking at the comments posted to both of those.
Once again, we'll be having two prizes for each. As is now going to be standard for these kinds of contests, both will be random draws. One of those will be a random draw, where everyone who submits at least one article/blog or makes one comment over the month will have an equal chance to win. The second will be a weighted random draw, where you get one entry in the competition for each article/blog posted or comment made over the month.

Random Draw: SpaceSquirrel
Weighted Draw: tayz
Commentator Contest:
Random Draw: badboy99
Weighted Draw: futurefrog

Everyone here has pretty much hit on the head why we prefer random draws to simply going for the person with the most posts. Even if every single piece of English language, worthwhile anime news, reviews and commentary posted somewhere online each day was posted on this site (and there's still a lot of room for us to expand there I think), we still wouldn't hit the average daily submission total that N4G.com gets. News for the "otaku" market is a very different beast, and with things being that much tighter, it's just not equitable to run the contests on a first-past-the-post basis.
Sorry for being a bit AWOL these past couple of weeks. Those prizes should start going out over the next couple of days.
The January prizes will be defaulting to contributors and commentators. In the end, after going through all entries to the mascot competition we only had 1 valid entry (simply because the other entries we did receive were too derivative of well known Shounen Jump series, instead of being original), and we were a little uncomfortable awarding effectively a prize by default.
