The 1990s were considered by many to be a golden age for manga and anime in America. Though shows like Speed Racer and Astro Boy enjoyed modest success when they aired in the 1960s, it was not until anime licensing companies such as FUNimation and VIZ Media began translating and buying the rights to popular Japanese shows that otaku culture began to make a dent in North America and other English speaking countries.
