Monsters in the Closet - Have we left them there?

Luke, Frank and Kane write:

"For many of us, some of our earliest experiences with anime involved the popular ‘monster taming’ genre. Series such as Pokemon, Digimon and even Monster Rancher captured our imagination all those years ago. While many monster taming series have come and gone, there has always been two mainstays in the genre – Pokemon and Digimon. Today we will reflect on this anime genre and explore its current presence in the anime industry as well as where we feel it is heading. So to start things off, how do you guys feel about this genre as it stands now? Is it as strong as ever or do you feel that it has seen a significant decline in quality over the years?"

Whatever happened to the Monster Rancher anime anyways? I think I saw it briefly either in English or subtitled a looong time ago, but never saw it again besides one or two episodes. Now I'm going to have to go look into that again.

It was awesome. Unfortunately it never got any further series besides its initial run.

This was an insightful read. Personally, I think my closet door has been closed for a while now and is unlikely to ever open again to the monster taming genre because it’s fairly obvious that most do cater towards children for obvious reasons like higher sales in their merchandise, video games etc.

When you put this into the equation you’re just left with a show that has no originality in it whatsoever and I think that’s what we’re seeing with the card battling genre as well. Nostalgia might be getting the better of me when I say this but I don’t think any show will ever be able to compete with the likes of Digimon and Pokemon apart from maybe Beyblade which I’m not sure fits into to this category.

Digimon really wasn't all that bad. It received a ton of hate but I liked every season up until the newest one.

Speaking of which. Holy crap how did Digimon get this bad.

Funnily, I never watched Pokemon.

Digimon was great! Pokemon always came across way to formulaic to me whereas Digimon despite being also a kid's show had an interesting story-line that really began to shine when they went back to the real world in the early seasons.

The monster designs were refreshing after becoming use to the more simplistic animal-like pokemon. Also, all the digimon were able to provide a sense of scale in power for their different forms that helped create some of the darker moments int he series.

Ahh, so much nostalgia...
