‘Gundam: The Origin’ First Film Gets English-Dubbed Emotional Trailer

The Hergula: The very first Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin anime just got an exciting new promotional video, an English-dubbed one, giving an idea of how the characters’ English voices will sound like. While it is common for a female Japanese voice actor to lend her voice for a male character, it is not equally common in English dubbed anime. Char Aznable, Casval Rem Deikum, is actually voiced by a woman named Karen Strassman in the English version of the upcoming film, something that will surely be discussed.

The official title for the episode is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin I – Blue-Eyed Casval, known in Japan as Kidou Senshi Gandamu: The Origin – Aoi Hitomi no Casval.

I mean, I get why Keith Silverstein is voicing Char, but what I wouldn't give for them to get Michael Kopsa. Also, I have no idea what the article is getting at with Karen Strassman. Male child characters being voiced by female VAs has been par for the course for a long time in anime, even in dubs.

Just to shed some light on that article, written by Keith, one of the writers, but it continues:

"While the voice is quite fitting, it is simply odd because the rest of the English cast have a voice actor of the same gender representing them. While some might be fine with Karen Strassman voicing Char, others might not, as the voice does indeed come off a bit feminine. Nevertheless, when in doubt, watch the original Japanese version."

Well, the opinion is quite clear, clear as glass actually. If you read the continuation after "discussed", you see that it is more or less simply about personal opinion. Author even complimented the voice, calling it simply a bit too feminine.
