iAX: Review: Summer Wars (Blu-Ray)

"Teaming up once again after the huge success of their earlier film, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, director Mamoro Hosoda, writer Satoko Okudera and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto have produced another hit, Summer Wars. Originally conceived as a story by Mamoro Hosoda, Summer Wars explores two facets: the exponential growth of people’s dependence on social networking and one boy’s experience while staying with a stranger’s family one summer."

Summer Wars is easily one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It's sad that it didn't get into the Oscars. I hate all that behind the scenes corruption that was against it.

I mean I have seen Toy Story 3 and How to Train Your Dragon and they are both incredible kids movies for sure but they are in no way better films then Summer Wars and last I checked the category wasn't called best kids movie(which is basically what it has boiled down to for quite some time now)

Hosoda was screwed when The Girl Who Leapt Through Time wasn't allowed into the Oscars(Really HAPPY FETT? HAHAH no way is that a better movie then The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) and basically the same thing happened this time. It's sad because it's likely he will never get the due he deserves. I mean incredibly talented anime directors have gone unnoticed(Satoshi Kon for example never got recognition when nearly every film he made should have been noticed and now he is gone).

Either way I'm really looking forward to seeing what Hosoda does in the future. He has incredible talent and I'm betting he still has room to grow as a Director so his work will only get better.

As much as I liked Summer Wars, Toy Story 3 will always be better. Now that said, I do think it deserved an oscar nod.

They would say that the problem is that they decided to only nominate three films again since they didn't get enough "submissions." BS. They could have easily nominated this and Disney's Tangled. Another absence that I'm miffed about.

Unfortunately, I think that anime is still generally underappreciated by the Academy in large, and unless your name is Miyazaki you aren't very likely to get a nod.

While everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion I truly do not think that Toy Story 3 is a better film then Summer Wars for many reasons. I'll talk about a few of them I guess.

Firstly is the fact that it's a kids movie through and through. While I appreciated what it was it had very very little for the adults. I can't count how many times I rolled my eyes because of how childish certain bits were. Unlike a movie like Shrek for example where there was tons for the kids and great jokes slipped in for the adults Toy Story 3 has very little of that(there is a tiny bit) and I think that makes it a somewhat weaker film.

2nd is the message the film sends(this could just be me) But the theme seems to be largely about how quick someone is to turn on you after years of friendship. All the toys with the exception of Woody turn on Andy despite being his beloved toys for years. You would think when Woody tells them that Andy was putting them in the Attic they would be like well That's probably true. But instead how quickly they turn on Andy is somewhat odd it really doesn't fit at least from my point of view.

Summer Wars on the other hand has plenty for kids and adults and there isn't much in it that is to mature for kids but it at the same time doesn't feel like a kids movies. Kids would love it if not only for the incredible art direction in the world of OZ and the bright colors while adults would love the story and the characters. It's just alot less hookey then Toy Story 3.

And something needs to be said for the message Summer Wars has for the dependency people have on the internet and importance of family. It's a film that has a message that fits the times and that makes it work all the more.

Again I'm not taking anything away from Toy Story 3 but it's not the best film ever as everyone thinks it is. It's a incredible kids movie and that's about as far as that goes.

Word, start to finish. While Toy Story 3 and How to Train a Dragon were awesome films in their own rights but ultimately, the do come off more as movies targeted towards kids. They ought to just name the flippin category to "Best Kids Movie" at this rate and just be done with it.

Someone needs to smack the Brick of Reason at the Academy and go "Animated features doesnt necessarily mean cartoons for kids AITE?" And HOW THE HELL is Happy Feet >> TGWLTT? Thats CRAZY right there :( Silly Academy

Well, for everyone else....there are the annie awards.

Perhaps the academy should just go and copy their top five picks every year....just a thought :).

Summers Wars is easily the most disappointing movie I've ever seen. So much pathetic hype and no payoff. The climax of the movie is a fucking card games??? Anime fans are such sheep. They seriously can't think for themselves.
