Recent evidence (possibly leaked) has pretty much confirmed the presence of another important, but familiar character in Avatar: The Legend of Korra.
I hope they are all alive. I can't wait to see Aang when Korra enters the Avatar state. I wonder if he stuck with the bald look?
I believe they said Katara is the only 1 still alive. I suppose Toph might be.
