If you haven’t seen this then you’re doing yourself a disservice. This has to be one of the most unique anime series to come out in a long time. For those wondering which order to watch this series, its Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari, and the OVA Nekomonogatari.
The series follows a high school guy named Koyomi Araragi. Apparently at one point he was attacked by a vampire and is now part vampire which basically means he can heal himself and take a lot of punishment which serves him well as most of the fights he’s getting completely “owned”. The series focuses on weird myths and legends and the super natural in general and follows Koyomi as he helps out several girls who have been possessed or afflicted by these spirits. The first one he meets is a girl named Hitagi Senjogahara who is afflicted by a crab spectra which causes her not to have any weight. She is a very interesting character I the dialogue between the two are some of the most enjoyable moments I’ve had in anime.
There are several different girls in which Koyomi helps and along with a middle age man named Oshino who lives in an abandoned building along with the vampire who turned Koyomi into a half vampire. The vampire girl reverts into a eight year old girl and if you watch Nekomonogatari there is an explanation on why. Oshino is really the authority on all the legends and his business is getting rid of these spirits, so helps out Koyomi when he can.
I will admit that this type of anime is not for everyone because there is a LOT of dialogue and most of the story unfolds within the dialogue between the characters. When I watched the first series I thought I had missed something as they would talk about events that had not happened. So I would safe if you tested positive for A.D.D. you may want to skip this, but this is also a good test for it as well. I had been warned about the amount of talking but have to say I enjoyed it more and it was easy to follow. Some have wondered if this could be translated into English given all the pop references and myths, but if Sgt. Frog can then anyone can. There isn’t an abundance of action, however, when there is action it is very extreme and rewarding.
Niseomonogatari follows the same but is more focused on Koyomi’s sisters Karen and Tsukihi aka the “Fire Sisters”. They are known for basically being “badasses” at their school and try to help people but mostly getting into trouble doing so. Karen is more of martial arts master and practices to no end while Tsukihi is pretty much the girly girl which I would say is the one that is more patient of them. I like how both are portrayed as well as all the characters in the series. They all seem to bring something unique to the table.
Nekomonogatari is a prequel and its discussed in the other series but it actually shows what happened. It follows a girl from Koyomi class Tsubasa who at some point gets possessed by a cat spirit and begins attacking people. I believe there is only for episodes and it follows the tradition of the series revealing a lot more information in regards to the characters.
The animation is something worth mentioning and how each scene unfolds and looks as if they put a lot of money into it. How each scene is setup is hard to explain because each shot transitions about every five seconds like the director may have A.D.D. and there seems to be flashes of Echii thrown in as well. There’s no nudity but there are some suggestive images as if they try to get you to stay focused and in my opinion its just the right amount and not too lewd.
One thing I didn’t notice about the series is that the victims usually have something representing their affliction. For Hitagi she uses school items as weapons in particular she uses a stapler in much the same was as a crab claw. I’m not going to go into details about the others as I don’t want to ruin to much of the series.
I think they have done a great job with this series and it seems they have put a lot of money in its production. I really would like to see an English dub as taking my eyes off the screen is doing this series a disservice. Hopefully they will release the entire Monogatari series in one bundle and soon and under $100. Can’t wait till crunchyroll starts streaming the next series.
