What are Nichirin swords?
Nichirin swords are special blades made using Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Ore. Swordsmiths use this ore because they have been bathing in the Sunlight on Mount Yoko. The ore’s ability to absorb sunlight can kill Demons, as Demons will disintegrate once they have made contact with the sun.
Nichirin swords are also known as color-changing blades. As such, these blades will change color when their user first draws them. As such, based on the Breathing Style you use, it can change the color of your Nichirin sword.
Throughout Demon Slayer, Haganezuka has been looking for a Demon Slayer that can turn their sword red. Why is this? The Red Nichirin sword can completely stop a Demon from regenerating. However, only a few Demon Slayers are able to use this technique.
Demon Slayer – Will Tanjiro’s Nichirin sword turn red?
At the beginning of Demon Slayer, when Tanjiro receives his Nichirin sword from Haganezuka, we see his sword turn black. Throughout the anime and manga, we learn that not much is known about a black Nichirin sword. Finally, however, we learn that black swords are a sign of a bad omen, and the user will die young.
As the anime and manga progress, we soon learn that there are three ways to turn a sword red in Demon Slayer. The first is by having a Demon Slayer Mark. Secondly, clashing two Nichirin swords together will turn it red. Finally, Nezuko’s Blood Demon Art can turn the Nichirin sword red.
With Tanjiro’s Demon Slayer Mark, he can turn his sword bright red. When using Hinokami Kagura, a Breathing Style from the creator Tsugikuni Yoriichi, Tanjiro can become even more powerful. (Although this will happen closer to the completion of the anime)
